Living Sacrifice: sacrifice, altar, offer your bodies, serving

Cast: Two characters either male or female.

Scene Opens: (First person: Enters reading.)

Chris: "(read from Rom:12, 1-2>I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service...)" (Chris looks up, thinking.) "(…And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.).... Hmm. A living sacrifice." (Then looks around. Shrugs.) "Okay, but if I'm going to be a sacrifice, I'm going to need an altar." (Chris gets a few chairs together, uses a bench on platform if available--anything make-shift and handy. Lies down across "altar".) "I'm glad God wants a living sacrifice."

Torry: (Enters with a list. Sees Chris on altar, thinks it's strange, but doesn't comment.) "Hello, Chris, you're just the person I wanted to see. I'm wondering if you would like to come out Saturday and help us with the work day at church."

Chris: "Sorry. I won't be able to make it."

Torry: "Oh, ok, well, (consults list) could you maybe teach the (Teen class while Phil is on vacation)?"

Chris: "I'm afraid not."

Torry: "Hmm. Let's see. (We really need help picking up kids for VBS)."

Chris: "Nope."

Torry: "We need (someone to help Bother Bill at the Nursing Home)."

Chris: "Uh-uh."

Torry: (Getting a little desperate) "Could you sing in the choir?"

Chris: "I don't see how."

Torry: (Not angry, but exasperated) Tosses list on floor in front of Chris. "Do you think you could pick up a piece of paper and put it in the trash?"

Chris: (Makes feeble attempt to reach it.) "I guess not, sorry."

Torry: (In disbelief) "Would you mind telling me why you won't help anyone out, here?"

Chris: "Hey, this isn't my idea. (with superiority) I'm being a living sacrifice. This is my altar. God told me to."

Torry: (Smiling.) "I don't think this is exactly what He had in mind."

Chris: (Sits up, interested.) "No? Well then, what does it mean?"

Torry: "Since His Spirit is living within you, you have certain gifts for serving Him. Using those gifts to serve others at home, work, church, and everywhere you go involves sacrifice. You sacrifice your time, talents, energy, money-- all you have and all you are to help people because of your love for them and for God."

Chris: (Picks up list.) "So I have to do everything on this list?"

Torry: "No. Why don't you take this home, pray about it and see what God puts in your heart to do?"

Chris: "Oh, ok." (Leaving together.) "That (bench, chair) was getting pretty hard, anyway." (Holding back like it is in pain and stiff)
